You Might Be Just One Deal Away...

You Might Be Just One Deal Away...

After over a decade in tech sales, I've learned a simple, but very important truth about success: It's not linear.

As much as we all want have a consistent "up and to the right," trajectory in our results, growth and careers, the cold hard truth is it seldomly happens that way.

There's always going to be a lot of ups and downs on the road to professional and financial success and in our profession this is as constant as death and taxes.

On the bright side though, this will not only make things more interesting in your career journey, it will also help you truly appreciate the wins when they do happen.

With all that said, this week's email is meant to be a reminder that despite the highs and lows, you may very well be just one deal, one interview round or one big quarter away from life-changing career and financial success.

Seriously!

Over the years, I've seen this play out time and time again.

  • You end up working a massive deal that closes and you find yourself $100K richer after the commission check clears.
  • After getting turned down for what you thought was your dream opportunity, a much better one with more upside lands and you end up having a great run, which wins you commissions, awards and a trip to P-Club.
  • After a series of "goose eggs" you end up having your biggest quarter and you find yourself on a promotion path.
  • You reach the end of your ramp period with no deals only to have a signed order form land right before getting PIP'd.
  • A deal you poured your heart and soul into is lost, but comes back two quarters later and puts you into overachievement.

The key to navigating these ups and downs comes down to managing your mindset.

You have to always remember that nothing (good or bad) lasts forever.

All you can do is focus on what you can control. Keep doing those revenue generating activities, aim to improve 1% every day and most importantly, don't give up!

Thanks for reading and here's to finishing out 2025 strong!

7 Moves That Put You in the Top 1% of Sales Candidates The job market is no joke right now. If you are interviewing for an SDR role, AE role, or even a leadership role in tech, just know this: you are competing against a stacked bench of very qualified sellers. Layoffs created a deep talent pool and every open role is getting flooded with applicants. That means “pretty good” is not good enough. You need to stand out. Intentionally. This week I want to share a handful of tactical moves that I...

The Story of Turning a $10K Pilot Into a 7-Figure Enterprise Deal Last year, I resurfaced an interview I did on the How the Deal Was Done podcast where I broke down the biggest annual contract I’ve ever closed. A seven-figure agreement with a massive, publicly traded consumer brand. And the funniest part? It started with an inbound lead from a UX manager. Not a VP. Not procurement. Not the CFO. A UX manager. So if you’re sitting on a deal that feels “too small” or “too low in the org,” keep...

10 Unconventional Moves I’m Making to Win in 2026 If you have been around Sales Players for any length of time, you know that December is my reset window. It is when I look at what worked, what fell flat, and what I need to change if I want next year to look meaningfully better than the last. The last couple of years have been a grind. Layoffs, budget freezes, deals slipping, and pipelines that felt shakier than they used to. A lot of momentum across tech sales has felt fragile. That is...
